Grand Theft Auto 2 is a top-down open-world action game set in the retro-futuristic Anywhere City. You move on foot or steal vehicles, take jobs from criminal gangs, collect weapons, and deal with police and rival gangs as your choices reshape the streets.

How to Play Grand Theft Auto 2

Use colored payphones to accept jobs from different gangs. Completing a mission raises your respect with that faction and leads to tougher work, but favoring one gang can make its rivals hostile. Your money, score, missions, gang respect, and wanted level all affect what happens next.

Anywhere City has three districts: Downtown, Residential, and Industrial. Earn enough score to unlock the next district, then learn its streets and keep a getaway car close. A vehicle helps you reach objectives and escape when police or rival gangs turn a job into a chase.

Car theft, gunfights, and destruction attract law enforcement. Unnecessary chaos can raise your wanted level and make a simple objective harder, so choose when to create trouble and when to leave quickly. Building respect before taking harder missions also helps because higher-level jobs require stronger gang relationships.

Game Controls

On foot, use the arrow keys to move and turn, Ctrl to attack or fire, Enter to enter a vehicle, and Space to jump or slide under a vehicle. X and Z select weapons, while Tab performs a special action. In a vehicle, the arrows accelerate, reverse, and steer; Space uses the handbrake, Enter exits, and Tab uses the horn or siren.
