About Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3 is a 2D side-scrolling platformer starring Mario or Luigi. Bowser and the Koopa Kids have stolen magic wands and turned the kingdom rulers into animals, so you must cross the Mushroom World, clear its stages, and face Bowser.

The game has eight kingdoms with different themes, including desert levels with pyramids and a giant world where enemies and obstacles are much larger. Each kingdom contains multiple levels, and some stages hide secret areas or shortcuts.

How to Play Super Mario Bros. 3

Run and jump through each level while dealing with Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Piranha Plants, Fire Snakes, Chain Chomps, Bloobers, Cheep Cheeps, Buzzy Beetles, and Spikes. You can slide down slopes, climb vines, pick up and throw special blocks, and use power-ups to reach or defeat enemies.

Question-mark blocks may contain a Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, or Super Leaf. The Mushroom makes Mario grow, the Fire Flower lets him throw fireballs, and the Super Leaf gives him a raccoon suit with flight and a tail attack. Other power-ups include the frog suit, Tanooki suit, and warp flute.

Each level has a timer, so running out of time costs a life. Touching an enemy also costs a life unless a stronger form absorbs the hit and drops Mario to a weaker form. Falling into a hole or touching fire costs a life as well. Collect coins for extra lives, and finish levels quickly for bonus points.

• Control your jumps: Hold the jump key for a higher jump, and use slopes, vines, and power-ups to change how you approach obstacles.

Game Controls

• Arrow Up - Enter doors; with Z, jump out of water or enter some upside-down pipes.
• Arrow Down - Crouch, enter some pipes, or slide down slopes.
• Arrow Left / Arrow Right - Move left and right.
• Key X - Run while moving, pick up and kick Koopa shells, use a Raccoon or Tanooki tail attack, throw Fire Mario’s fireballs, or turn Tanooki Mario into a statue while holding Down.
• Key Z - Jump, swim, fly or float with Raccoon or Tanooki Mario, or perform a Super Jump after landing on an enemy.
• Enter - Start the game.
