Balatro
Balatro turns poker hands into a single-player roguelike run: beat escalating blinds, spend cash in shops, and build card and Joker combinations.
About Balatro
Balatro is a single-player poker-themed roguelike deck-building game. You start each run with a 52-card deck, choose a deck with its own effect, and play poker hands to score enough chips to defeat each blind.
The game rewards careful deck and Joker choices rather than ordinary poker play. Jokers can add Chips or Mult, change how hands work, create or copy cards, and affect your available hands or discards. Tarot, Spectral, Planet, and playing cards can also reshape your deck or improve specific poker hands.
How to Play Balatro
Each run is divided into antes, and each ante contains a Small Blind, Big Blind, and Boss Blind. During a round, you have a limited number of hands and discards. Select up to five cards to form a poker hand, then try to reach the blind’s target score before you run out of opportunities.
Your score starts with the hand’s base Chips and is then multiplied by Mult. Jokers, card effects, and upgraded poker hands can raise either value, so the strongest run usually comes from combining effects that support the same scoring plan. You can discard cards to replace up to five cards in your hand, but every discard is limited.
Defeat a blind and you’ll receive cash for the shop between rounds. The shop sells items such as Jokers, booster packs, and vouchers. Vouchers provide permanent upgrades for the current run, including changes to shop contents or extra hands and discards.
Small and Big Blinds may be skipped. Skipping gives up the cash reward and shop opportunity, but awards a tag that can provide a benefit when you enter a later shop. Boss Blinds have special abilities that can disable cards or limit your hands and discards, so check the blind’s effect before committing to a scoring plan.
Complete ante 8 by defeating its first Showdown Blind to win the run. You can continue afterward in endless mode, but running out of hands or cards before reaching a round’s target score ends the run.
Tips for Balatro
- Build your Joker slots around effects that trigger together. Limited Joker space makes each combination important.
- Use discards to improve the hand you are trying to score, but keep enough hands and cards to reach the blind’s target.
- Spend shop cash with your current scoring plan in mind. Jokers, deck changes, and Planet cards can strengthen different poker hands.
- Read Boss Blind abilities before choosing whether to play or skip a blind. A restriction on cards, hands, or discards can change which option is safer.
FAQ
What is the goal in Balatro?
Play poker hands and score enough Chips multiplied by Mult to defeat three blinds in each ante. Defeat the first Showdown Blind in ante 8 to win the run.
How do Jokers work in Balatro?
Jokers are held separately from your deck and modify scoring or other game rules. Their effects can add Chips or Mult, reward cash, create or duplicate cards, or change your available hands and discards.
Can you change the deck during a run?
Yes. Shops and card effects can add, modify, copy, or destroy playing cards. Tarot and Spectral cards can also alter cards, while Planet cards raise the level of a specific poker hand for the rest of the run.
What happens when you lose a round?
If you run out of hands or cards before reaching the required score, the run ends. In endless mode, the same failure condition ends the current run even after you have completed ante 8.
